This anime-style elf is scrimshaw on a Baltic Amber heart.

Scrimshaw basically means taking a very fine-tipped knife or engraving tool,
and carving tiny lines into the surface of the amber (or ivory, in the old days),
and then filling in the lines with a heavily pigmented ink like India ink.

If I remember correctly, the amber heart used here was about one inch tall --
so you can see I was working pretty small!
